Helping Our Neighbors Ministry
Helping Our Neighbors (HON) is a ministry of the church that helps people in the Kalamazoo community with emergency needs, especially when they are facing eviction or utility shut-offs. Through this ministry, our church pledges to help pay a person's bill.
On Thursday mornings, from 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers meet with people one-on-one. There are three ways you can participate in this ministry: 1) Donate money to the fund. The money is much needed and truly used to help people stay warm, have running water, and feel more secure in their homes; 2) Could you dedicate a Thursday morning once or twice a month to help meet with those in our community with a great need? 3) Flexible positions open involving an hour or two a week that help with paperwork, emails, and returning phone calls as necessary; 4) Pray for this ministry. "God, thank you for giving our church the opportunity to sit with our neighbors. Help these encounters transform this church."
If you are in need of emergency assistance, come to the church on Thursday mornings between 10 am and noon with a photo ID, the invoice or bill you would like help with, and any other pledges you may have received. When you arrive, you will meet with a volunteer who will listen to you and help guide you through the pledge process. The last person is seen by 11:45 a.m. No appointments are necessary.
