Advent Academy Classes
December 3-17, 2017, 9:30 - 10:30 am
We offer two adult Sunday School classes during Advent
Becoming the Neighbor You Were Meant to Be (Fellowship Room)
We're all travelers. Like Jesus' family in the Advent story, we find ourselves in situations where there is no room at the inn. Some in our midst are seeking safety for their families like Mary and Joseph taking the infant Jesus to Egypt to elude Herod's search for the newborn King. As Christians, we are called to be good neighbors to the stranger and immigrant in our community. This class will explore what it means to be a neighbor in a world where hospitality can be in short supply. The class will be led by Jennifer Clark and Miriam Downey, the editors of "Immigration and Justice for Our Neighbors: An Anthology."
Christ Figures in Popular Films, continued (Parlor)
Hollywood films both reflect and influence culture through cinematic storytelling. In a follow-up to last year’s “Jesus Christ Movie Star,” this class examines a number of popular movies, looking at how various film roles show characteristics of Christ, how these portrayals evolved, and what these movie messiahs might mean to our culture and us. Some Christ-like characterizations may be obvious, others more subtle. Mark Stucky leads the class in the Parlor.
