United Methodist Women Sunday
Sunday, October 21, 8:30 am - 12 pm
This year on United Methodist Women Sunday (October 21), our attention will be on homelessness in the Kalamazoo area. Rev. Julie Kline will lead our worship service. Rick Stravers, Executive Director of Open Doors Kalamazoo, will be our pulpit guest. Rick's message, "What Do You Want?" will reference Mark 10:35-45. Rick was ordained as a priest in the Episcopal church in 1987, and served as the rector at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Richland, Michigan from 1988-1999. Rick has been the Executive Director at Open Doors since 1999. Open Doors was established in 1970 with a focus on building a community of people who are overcoming homelessness through relationships, housing, employment, education, and sobriety in response to God's love for all. They are privately funded by people who want to make a difference. In 2004, Open Doors established the Residence Community. The Residence Community provides affordable apartments and personal support to working individuals and families who are priced out of market-rate housing or who have other barriers to housing. Most residents in the Residence Community have experienced homelessness. Many need support to assist them through personal crises. The model not only provides these working families with affordable housing, it also provides support and community. Open Doors offers the encouragement and resources needed for success. Rick will be providing information about homelessness in the Kalamazoo community, as well as information about Open Doors, both in worship and in a class, "Thinking About Housing and the Homeless," at 9:30 a.m. There will be a special offering to support the important work that Open Doors is doing in our community. Come learn about other ways you can support them as well!
