Rev. John Boley, Senior PastorRev. Steve Charnley

Senior Pastor

Rev. Steve Charnley started his appointment at Kalamazoo First United Methodist Church on July 1, 2014.  Steve is a graduate of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He became a deacon in 1978, then elder in 1982 while serving in Wisconsin. He was appointed to Newago in 1988. He moved to Gull Lake United Methodist Church in 1994 as only its second pastor. In 2008, he was appointed to Greenville United Methodist Church, about 40 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. In 2013 he became the lead pastor of a new cooperative parish that also included Belding UMC and Turk Lake UMC. Steve currently serves as a Trustee at Albion College. He and his wife Cindy have two adult children, Iain and Autumn.

Rev. Julie KlineRev. Julie Kline

Associate Pastor

Julie’s responsibilities include the leadership of our Emerging Worship and the direction of our programs of youth and young adult ministries. She has come full circle with her return to First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo, as she grew up in this church, graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, and received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in psychology and her Masters of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. She later went on to obtain her full ordination in the United Church of Christ. Julie is passionate about her ministry here at FUMC and believes that we can each be a part of creative ministry that calls us to engage in an ongoing relationship with our Creator and become the hands and feet of Christ.

Rev. Dan DuncanRev. Dan Duncan

Associate Pastor

Dan joined us in the fall of 2014 as our Pastor of Children & Families Ministries. He is a graduate of Kalamazoo College and Garrett Evangelical Seminary. Dan had been Senior Pastor at Grand Haven's Church of the Dunes since 2003 before coming to Kalamazoo First. Prior to that, he served at Fremont, Muskegon Central, Snow, and Vergennes United Methodist churches. Dan and his wife Mary have three adult children, Jesse, Ania and Julia. Dan and Mary are happy to be back in the Kalamazoo area where they can enjoy family connections as well as a variety of sports and hobbies, including Dan's woodworking!

Rev. Keith TremanRev. Keith Treman

Pastor of Congregation Care

Keith joyfully returned the summer of 2016 to our clergy staff after 17 1/2 years. He is a graduate of Garrett Evangelical Seminary. Keith has served churches in Illinois and Ohio 1983-1985 and in the West Michigan Conference at Whitehall/Claybanks United Methodist Churches 1985-1990, First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo as Pastor of Membership and Evangelism 1990-1998, Sturgis United Methodist Church as Senior Pastor 1998-2008, Portland United Methodist Church 2008-2015 and took retired status after 32 years. Keith's wife Colleen is an ordained Deacon and had served here as Director of Children's Ministry from 1990-1998. Keith and Colleen enjoy traveling with emphasis to Israel. They have two adult sons, Nathan and Kevin. Keith's personal mission is based on Matthew 22:37-40.

Jacqueline StilgerJacqueline Stilger

Minister of Music

A native of Southern Indiana, Jacqueline has been involved in church music since high school. She was active as a cantor and organist at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in her hometown of Lanesville. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from the University of Louisville, where she studied with Melvin Dickenson, and a Master of Music degree in Organ and Church Music from Indiana University, studying with Dr. Marilyn Keiser. She has served congregations in Kentucky, Indiana, New York and Michigan. She has been the Minister of Music at First United Methodist Church since the summer of 2009. Jacqueline resides in Kalamazoo with her three children, Carsten, Drew and Avery.

Ruth LamachiaRuth LaMachia

Church Business Administrator

Ruth LaMachia came to Kalamazoo First in September 2012 from Perrow Church in Cross Lanes, West Virginia where she also served as their Church Business Administrator. Before that she spent 25 years as an administrator and manager in the insurance industry in Connecticut and West Virginia. She is originally from the Chicago area and her father, a former minister, is from Port Huron so she spent much time growing up visiting family in Michigan. Ruth lives in Kalamazoo with her husband Bill and daughter Elizabeth. She also has a son, Justin, who lives in Minneapolis.

Kelsey BurnsKelsey Burns

Seminary Intern

Kelsey joined the church staff as a seminary intern on June 5, 2017. She will be working for eight weeks this summer with our four pastors, who will mentor and enlist her in various aspects of our ministry at First UMC. She is a recent graduate of Albion College with degrees in Psychology and Spanish. While at Albion college she was involved with Christian Life on campus and spent three years leading the student-led Chapel Service. This past spring she began the ordination process and recently received her certification as a candidate of ordained ministry. She will be heading to Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminar in the fall of 2017.
