Phone Ministry Project
Think of how important your cell phone is to you and then think of those who need one but can’t afford one. Our church’s involvement in helping the unhoused and other persons in need in the Kalamazoo community became the impetus for creating the Helping Our Neighbors Phone Ministry Project. We encountered many local underserved people who, when asked “What do you need the most?”, said “We need a reliable way to communicate with persons and places that are essential for our safety and welfare.”
Kalamazoo First UMC’s Phone Ministry Project is providing quality cell phones with one-year of service (minutes, text and data) to underserved families in the Kalamazoo community. These phones enable them to contact organizations and obtain services that will help them in finding jobs and housing, making medical appointments, staying in touch with family and reaching 911 in emergency situations.
The need was overwhelming! Scores of people need a cell phone but are without the means to buy one. Our church’s HON Phone Ministry Project needs to continue. In order for us to keep moving forward we will need more funding from individuals as well obtaining grants. Our goal is getting enough funds to make this a sustainable ministry in order to distribute phones to all who have need.
We invite you to be part of our Helping Our Neighbors Phone Ministry Project. You can do so in either of these two ways:
- Mail a check to First United Methodist Church (FUMC) at 212 S. Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007 and include HON Phone Ministry Project in the memo line.
- Make an Online Donation to the HON Phone Ministry Project on the church website through this link.
