Advent, Week 4: Hope Is Worth the Risk

This week, we celebrate our children as they share with us their Christmas pageant, “The Inn,” directed by Jacqueline Stilger. The script was developed by St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church.

Hope and risk are two ideas that have a lot in common. When we hope for something, we don’t know if it will happen or not, we just want it to. Take a moment and show me with your body what feeling hopeful looks like. Just like when we’re hoping for something, we also don’t know what will happen if something is risky. A risk means things might turn out great—or not!

When we hope, there’s always the risk that things won’t work out the way we want them to. And sometimes when things don’t go the way we planned, they can actually turn out even better than we hoped for! Let’s hear a story about a man who didn’t like to take risks, but who learned that to have hope, we have to take risks sometimes.
