The Goodness of God: The Pure in Heart
July 31 @ 10:00 am
This Sunday our series in The Beatitudes continues with the Goodness of God as we consider Jesus’s blessings for the Pure in Heart. What does it mean to be pure in heart? In “The Cost of Discipleship,” Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote that the pure in heart are “Only those who have surrendered their hearts completely to Jesus that Jesus may reign in them alone…their hearts are not ruled by their conscience, but by the will of Jesus.” While this seems to be a lofty ideal we can look to, Bonhoeffer himself whose desire to be ruled only by the will of Jesus led him to be a martyr during the Second World War for his role in the confessing movement, and as part of the resistance to Hitler. While the pure in heart may sound like comforting beatitude, it may mean costly discipleship. In our worship we will explore the depths of this blessing, the will of God, and the cost of a heart attuned fully to Jesus.
