Information for Our Guests

All are welcome to First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo! We are excited that you are visiting our website and that you may be considering a visit to our church! It is our hope that you will find FUMC to be a warm and welcoming place. As our guest, we are honored to provide you and your family with many opportunities for spiritual growth. When you arrive, you will be greeted by a friendly hand shake at the door!  The Sanctuary is just around the corner from the parking lot entrance, but do not hesitate to ask a greeter for directions when you visit us.

  • Parking. There is plenty of parking available for church events behind the church (access off of Academy Street) and along Park and Academy Streets (street parking is free on Sundays). Parking is also available on Sunday morning in the Kalamazoo Insttiute of Arts parking lot that adjoins the church parking lot.

  • Family Room.  Located in the middle balcony of the sanctuary is a glassed-front room for those who wish to worship in a private setting, but parents can still see and hear the service. For your convenience, a diaper changing table, some books, and a rocking chair are also located in this room. Ushers are available to help direct you to this room if needed.

  • Wheelchair Accessible.  The church is almost 100% wheelchair accessible. Persons in wheelchairs can access the sanctuary from the west side. There is a wheelchair available at the parking lot entrance. Please ask an usher or greeter for assistance. An elevator is located in the Perks gathering area, an open area close to the parking lot entrance where we gather for fellowship and refreshments on Sunday.

  • Hearing Assistance.   If you have a hearing impairment which can be aided by specialized amplification, please stop at the Welcome Center for a device that can assist you. We have a loop system that can be used with hearing aid wearers as well as non-hearing aid wearers.

  • Large Print.  We have large print Bibles and United Methodist Hymnals available. Also, several copies of the bulletin are printed each week in large print. An usher can assist you in obtaining these items.

  • Prayer Requests.  We welcome your prayer requests. Please fill out a prayer request card that can be found in the back of the pew pockets and pass it to the outside of the aisle during the welcoming part of the service. We will acknowledge your prayer request during the pastoral prayers as well as share it with our prayer chain. We keep all prayer requests confidential if you request this on your prayer card.

  • Maps of the Church.  Our building is large and not only has three floors, but two lower levels as well. The classrooms are spread throughout the building. Located at the Welcome Center are copies of a facility map of the church. Please stop by the Welcome Center or ask a door greeter, office assistant, or an usher if you have questions about the location of a room or activity.

  • Welcoming Gift.  If you are worshipping with us for the first time, please stop by the Welcome Center so that we may personally welcome you and present a gift of love from First Church, and to answer any questions you may have. Also we would like to give you our welcoming folder that tells the story of who we are. Our latest newsletter The First Word, is included in the foler and tells the current story of our congregational life.

  • Want a Tour? We will be glad to give you one! Stop by the Welcome Center.

  • Park Street Perks!   Please join us on Sunday mornings in the Perks! gathering area for refreshments and fellowship between worship services (during the summer months, we have Summer Perks! after the 10:00 a.m. service). This is an informal way to meet new and old friends!

  • Dress. Wear what you are comfortable wearing. You'll see a variety of styles and preferences.

  • Safe Sanctuary Policy.  We have a Safe Sanctuary Policy to help make the church campus a more holy place of safety for children and worshipers.
