Academy Class: The Future of the UMC
September 16 - October 14, 9:30 - 10:30 am
This class will explore two related issues facing The United Methodist Church and its future. First, using a new documentary video entitled “Do No MORE Harm” the class will hear and discuss personal stories of people and families harmed by the continuing denial of full inclusion of LGBTQ persons in The United Methodist Church. Next, the class will consider serious questions being asked such as:
- Will our denomination continue to exclude LGBTQ persons from full participation in and with our churches?
- Is there a way to meaningfully eliminate or change our Church's current position to allow for full inclusion of all people?
- Will The United Methodist Church as we know it split over this issue like it did over slavery in the mid-1800s?
Finally, this will lead to learning about several proposals for change that will be considered at next February’s Special General Conference where decisions will be made about the future of The United Methodist Church. The class will be led by David Lundquist and Lori Owen-Rogers for six Sundays.
