Spring Valley Elementary Tutors
There is considerable research that shows that children who are not reading at grade level by third grade face far higher risks than their peers of dropping out of high school, becoming pregnant, unemployed or of entering the prison system. This was the statistic that in 2004 compelled Mary Bullock and others at our church to step up to the plate and with a razor sharp focus take action. In partnership with Kalamazoo Public Schools and Communities in School, members of the church volunteer at Spring Valley Elementary School a few hours a week to help increase the academic achievement of students who are falling behind in reading. Mary Bullock died in 2013 and the work of partnering with Spring Valley has passed to Joyce Treece. Please contact Joyce if you'd like to be a "Promise Helper" at (269) 375-8814. Through our United Methodist Women's group, the church also purchases children's books for Spring Valley Elementary.
