July 13 Worship

On Sunday, July 13 we commission our Appalachian Service Project Team who will be leaving for Johnson County, Tennessee on Saturday. The lectionary gospel lesson, interestingly enough, is the story of the good Samaritan. But let us not be too quick to draw lines from the story’s lesson to youth in mission. This week we’ll linger a bit with the lawyer’s question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” The good news is that we cannot do anything to inherit eternal life. This might sound like bad news to those socialized to believe that salvation is tied to our accomplishments. Like the lawyer – if we are caught believing in a works-based salvation we might not like what Jesus says to us. So maybe we need to back up and ask, “What is eternal life?”
