We often hear the story of Martha and Mary engaging with Jesus in their home, with an emphasis on Jesus’ response to Martha. “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, but few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” As we listen, let us open ourselves to the reality that they are both doing good things. Both women are showing hospitality and finding their home in Jesus. They embody different aspects of discipleship, and each has value and a time and place within our own lives. As we worship together, let us live into the portion of our mission statement that calls us to experience God’s love.
